Mini Archie’s March Furtle Around The Blogosphere

Archie The Wonder Dog

Furtle (v): to have a rummage or delve into the contents of something

Hello! This month has been a month of a bit more sleeping (hooray!) but still lots of sock knitting. The socks I started in January have been finished:

Here’s what I started with (plus Opal Navy Blue):

Yarn is three different Regia leftovers plus a mini skein (top right) by Vicki Brown Designs
which was a present from a friend

And here’s how much was left:

I’m quite happy with how much I managed to use in the making of the socks. Not as satisfied as if I’d used every last metre, but almost.

I started another pair of scrappy socks using these leftovers, two of which are from a friend’s leftovers box:
The orange yarn is ‘Rusting’ and the dark green is ‘Into The Forest’ and
are both by Mothy And The Squid

As the green doesn’t have any nylon content, I just used it in the legs: it wouldn't wear very well on the heels or feet and I’m not spending all that time knitting socks only to be darning them a few months later.

I didn’t want even stripes on the feet so knitted them helically - this is where you knit with two (or more) yarns at once and one chases the other round the needles so you sort of knit two rounds at a time, one on top of the other. It sounds complicated but is actually really easy and would be perfect for things like jumpers where you’re knitting with hand dyed yarn and are advised to alternate skeins so as not to end up with a tide mark where you’ve started a new skein. Find a really good tutorial here and fast forward to about the three minute mark to see how it works.

I ended up running out of the dark green yarn before the orange (which I knew would happen as I didn’t have as much of it) and ran out of the orange before the end of the toe, which was annoying. Fortunately, the same friend who gave me the orange and light green also gave me some lovely red which worked well so these socks have red noses. They gave me a little fright when I washed them this week as they grew considerably. Fortunately, they ungrew after a night in the airing cupboard.

Then I made another pair (of course I did - I promise I still love sewing, it’s just that I’m not well enough to do any machine sewing at the moment and don’t have any hand piecing prepped, so sock knitting it is) which were a lovely easy knit after two scrappy pairs.

Yarn is a OOAK (One Of A Kind) by Made By Penguins

So that’s three more finishes fettled - my Fettle Those Finishes list is looking a little shorter, but only in the knitting section.

And I’ve started (yet) another pair, this time the whole of the leg and foot are knitted helically as this is a great way to eke out a special ball of sock yarn into a pair of socks. The ball I’m using weighed 49.31g and as this sock used just 12.99g of the rainbow yarn, I’m hoping I’ll eke it into two pairs, although the second set won’t be exactly like these as there’s not enough for that.

Here’s the rainbow ball:

And here’s the first sock in the pair:

Mini Archie has been out finding signs of spring and he didn’t have to look very far at all:

I really does look spiffing in/near yellow *modest face*

And I looks equally as spiffing in fiery orangey red, especially when Up High

I hope you’ve all had a good month, I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ve been up to.

Linking up to the March Furtle

If you're linking up, please add a link (one per person, please) to your blog post, which could contain: a mosaic of all you've made in the month, something you've made/started/worked on, a goal which you'd like to achieve in the next month (and then in next month's post you can reflect on that goal and set yourself another one - I find this particularly handy if I'm in the midst of a big project and finding the making of hundreds of blocks to be interminable), anything crafty you'd like to share. This isn't just for sewing or quilting, but is for all crafts so if you knit, make lace, make clothes, do anything which could come under the heading of 'craft', then please link up. Please visit the link immediately before and after you and leave an encouraging comment, and more if you can manage it - we all know that comments create joy, so let's spread some around. Also, please treat all the linked posts and their authors with respect - I want this to be an inclusive space for all crafters and crafts and all are welcome. If you're not sure if you're welcome or you belong, you do - this is by no means a closed space and if you want to join, then you are most welcome. If you need help linking up, please leave a comment and I will do my best to help. Please add the Furtling button to your blog post: copy the code below and paste it into your blog post - it should then magically appear when you publish your blog post (I'll do my best to help if you have any problems) and it will help people find the Furtling page with all the details of the link up.

To link up, go to the link at the bottom of this page and click on 'link up' (it's a blue button) and then add your link (website URL), a title (this could be your blog name but could also be something interesting to draw people to it (keep it clean!) if you prefer), and your email. This last one doesn't appear on the link (I will have access to it - I won't use it unless there's a problem and I need to contact you) so don't worry that you're about to share your email address with the world (or the handful of people who find this link), you're not! The link will remain open until 10th April; if you're seeing this post after this date, I'm afraid you can't link up to the March Furtle, but you can link next month if you like.

You are invited to the Inlinkz link party!
