Finish-Along Q2 2016

Finish-A-Long 2016

1. I'm hoping to start hand quilting this quilt, but first I need to order the thread I need!  I won't get much done, but if I can at least buy the thread, make the stencil (after deciding what shape to put in the centre of the snowball blocks) and quilt at least one block then I'll be happy!  It all depends on how well I'm feeling, how warm the weather gets, and how much gardening I need/want to do!

2.  Just for the fun of it, I'm going to keep this quilt on my list.  I need to start machine quilting the background round the (hand quilted) star, but I can't see me doing any this quarter. However, experience has taught me that it's just when you think you won't make any progress on a project that you end up doing loads on it, so it's staying put!  This is my Christmas Cherry quilt (based on the Made In Cherry pattern by Sarah Fielke).

3.  I'm planning to make two 'bolster' cushions to go with the blue and white quilt and intend to use the 508 'bonus' HSTs which resulted from making the snowball blocks.  I need to decide how to arrange them but I have done a little playing!  (And very little nothing else!)

4.  I need to turn this pulled thread work into a pin cushion.

5.  Mam and I need a bag to take our cutting boards and rulers to workshops.  We don't usually go to the same one so we can easily share a bag rather than having one each.  (I'm not quite sure why I've been landed with the job when she takes her board far more often and will probably use the bag much more!)  We got this off-cut (with an extra 30% off!) just before Christmas and I've rummaged in my loft to find this piece of canvas for the lining - it's not the prettiest fabric but it'll provide nice structure.  The bag will need two padded pockets (one for the 24" ruler and one for square rulers), as well as handles and, possibly, a magnetic catch.  Not the most exciting project I've ever listed, but it'll come in handy!

6. I only have one Christmas/winter cushion and that obviously needs rectifying.  I don't think I'll touch this until Q3, but I'm leaving it on here just in case!  I have 32 mini charms (not sure what I've done with the rest!) and the remains of a plain white charm pack and I'm hoping that hexagons will be involved.  (They will, I've just decided!)

Christmas cushion plans

7.  This is a cushion kit which I won from Kerry/Seamstar.  It's been on my list for a while now and I have made some progress since this photo was taken: I've ironed all the fabric!

8.  A friend bought me this lovely embroidery outline (is that the right term?) a while ago and I'd love to make it into something.  No idea what that something will be yet (or rather, I can't decide between options!) but I can think about that while I stitch!

9.  This project has been long in the planning (well, more long in the fabric collecting and thinking!) and was going to be simple squares with lots of hand quilting.  I've slightly changed my plan and it will now be a scrappy trip quilt, inspired by Lynz's version.  I have some gorgeous low volume strips (sent by a wee treasure!) to add to these, they're in the photo below this one.

10.  This table runner (block pattern by Reene Witchard - find them here) was started in Q4 2015 and it's now ready for layering and quilting.  (I even have the backing and wadding sorted.)

11.  This is also going to become a table runner for my new coffee table, once I can bring myself to cut into the embroidered (not by me!)  table cloth!
Liberty and linen

12.  I need a storage basket to keep next to the front door for all those bits and pieces that I sometimes need in my handbag (brolly, tape measure, sun cream, etc.) and thought that a quilted piece of fabric would be just the thing.  I ordered this fabric (Rain in mist) for another project but don't like the colour (it's one of those greeny greys), so I'm going to see how much I can use up in this project.  I've cut and layered the outer pieces, but that's as far as I've got!

13.  This is the result of a paisley free hand embroidery workshop and is now ready to become the front panel of a Lola pouch.

14.  Oh, this poor quilt!  It's been on several of my FAL lists and was, briefly, a finish.  Then I realised that there was a problem with the quilting (the bobbin thread keeps snapping) and I've been meaning to replace the quilting.  I've done one line (with different stitch length and tension from the first time) but, I'll be honest, it's mind-numbing work.  I'm going to change my plan slightly and replace the lines where threads have snapped and then leave the rest but quilt in the ditch of all the sashing strips.  That should be enough to stop the bias stretch on the quilt, which, I think, is exacerbating the problem with the quilting.  If it doesn't, I might quilt in the ditch round the grey block borders.  I have to be careful not to add too much quilting as it's already bound but I'm hoping I'll get away with it...

15.  These are the last remnants of the grey and yellow fabric that Mam bought to make her sewing machine cover and I'm hoping to cobble something together to use them all up.  Two pieces have wadding fused to the back (the result of a miscalculation) and I'm planning to make a storage basket with these last oddly-sized bits.

16.  Last quarter, Hadley had a 'win my WIP' giveaway in order to foist her hexies onto someone else pass on a lovely project and I was the lucky winner.  I'm going to turn these into (yet another) table runner (I like to think that I'm increasing my chances of having one by the end of the quarter!), once I've quilted it.  I have the backing and wadding sorted, and may layer and pin this one at the same time as the rosettes runner.

17.  I've promised to make an EPP pin cushion for a special something that Nicky and Maria are organising.  I can't remember the deadline, but it's this quarter.  I'll be using these fabrics:

18.  I'm about to start a sort of secret project, which involves a bundle of Oakshott and the templates used to make this nigh-on-complete test block:
Test block progress

19. I need to complete the test block shown above, square it up (with corner pieces) and then I'll quilt it and turn it into a mini quilt for my wall.

20.  I need to start preparing one of my tutorials for the FAL (my date is in October!) and I'm going to make a machine needle book (similar to the one I made last year which is towards the bottom of this post) in these gorgeous pinks and oranges.
Needle book and Lola pouch

21.  I'd also like to make a large Lola pouch to go with the needle book, using the same fabrics.

22.  I have been planning this quilt since at least 2013 and would like to at least make a start on prepping blocks.  I have a range of backgrounds can't decide whether to go scrappy or not, which is why I have quite a lot of some of them) and some gorgeous Oakshott (Scandinavian, I think).  The block pattern is in the photo and I've already completed a test block.  (See the fabrics third and fourth up from the bottom?  They're supposed to be the same colour...)
Pointy points

23.  If I don't get the pointy points quilt started, it would be nice to make progress on my ET quilt instead.  I have two blocks pieced and pieces cut for more blocks (but not enough background to make a whole block).  One more completed block would be nice!

24.  I also need to start preparing for the FAL tutorial I need to provide in January 2017 (yes, really!).  I'm going to make a table runner from these gorgeous Oakshott fabrics:
(yet another) Table runner

25.  I'd like to make a sewing machine mat out of the remnants of the fabric I bought for my trug and sewing machine accessories:
Remaining scraps

26.  I'd like to finish this sock and make its pair, if my shoulder will let me:

27.  Lynz and I are planning another leisurely knit-along.  This time we're making the Pebble Beach shawl, and I'm using this yarn:

ETA 16/4 18.58 (link still open!):

28.  I recently bought fabric and a pattern to make myself a dress.  I'm going on a sewing day in May so I'm hoping to get quite a bit done by the end of the quarter, maybe even a finish!
Kate dress

Oh, that's better - a list with a perfect 28 items on it...far better than a list with a mere cube number of items ;o)

I expect know I'll be putting many of these on my Q3 and 4 lists (and probably most of the lists for next year, too!) lists but I'll knock them off eventually!

Archie is going to do his best to coax me out of the garden and into my sewing room:

That's enough gardening: you've got things on your FAL list to finish *laughs up his sleeve*  Come on, chip chop!
Wish me luck!!

  4. Oh my! I feel like I need a lie down after reading your list. I particularly love your ET block and am feeling the urge to make one as a cushion (goes off to hunt it down)- looking forward to seeing the progress you make.

  5. I'm not quite sure you have enough projects there! Archie seems to be in the mood to get you very busy on all of these! (you have more on your list than me!!)

  6. I love the outer fabric in 18, do you know what it is? Number 22, is this actually something that exists as a pattern? I couldn't find it on Lynne's site... I think looking at your list made me add about a dozen new projects to mine LOL!!

  7. You have some lovely proposed finishes Helen. The hexies, and the knitting, and the big star quilt, and the embroidery. And the garden is looking good too.

  8. SO glad to see someone else with a reputation for UFO's! But most look well under way so i am sure you will be very successful this quarter!
I'm really not very sure I could cut into that gorgeous table cloth but I do love the fabric you've married with it . . . so . . . cant wait to see how it turns out!
Hope your shoulder improves . . you need every bit of muscle to open Archie's biscuit packets!
